When AI Amplifies Learning Instead of Replacing It

Have you ever sat in a classroom while a teacher explained something everyone else seemed to understand, and wondered why it wasn’t making sense to you?
Maybe you stayed quiet because you didn’t want anyone to know. Maybe you decided you weren’t good at math, writing, languages or whatever subject was in front of you. Sometimes those beliefs follow us for years, even when the real problem was never our intelligence. We simply needed someone to explain it differently.
I had one of those moments with my daughter last school year.
She came home with some algebra problems she needed to complete to move into the next level of math. She wanted to understand them and do the work herself, but she needed help. The problem was that I couldn’t remember how to do the algebra either.
I could already imagine how the afternoon might unfold. She would become increasingly frustrated because it wasn’t making sense. I would become frustrated because I wanted to help, but didn’t know how to teach something I didn’t understand myself. There might be tears. And underneath the frustration, she might begin to wonder whether not understanding the algebra meant she wasn’t smart enough.
I think many parents know this feeling. We want to help our children, but wanting to help and knowing how to help are not always the same thing. Sometimes we end up feeling just as powerless as they do.
I decided to see if I could use chatgpt to help me understand how to teach the concept to her. This was my decision, not hers. She had been told not to use it, so I was the one interacting with it and guiding the process. I also made sure it didn’t give us the answers. The purpose wasn’t to make the work disappear. It was to find another doorway into the learning.
As I worked with AI, she was watching me. Without planning it, I realized I was modeling something else for her too.
First, she was seeing that I don’t have the answers to everything. I think there can be something powerful in our children watching us admit that we don’t know, then seeing us remain curious rather than becoming embarrassed or giving up.
Second, she was learning that we don’t have to ask AI for the answer. If we give it the right instructions, it can become an ally. It can help us understand something, approach it differently or find a way forward without taking over the thinking.
Something shifted for both of us.
Instead of spending the afternoon feeling defeated, she began to understand. She still had to think, solve the problems and show her work by hand. But once the explanation was presented in a way that made sense to her, she was able to do what had seemed impossible only a few minutes earlier.
She went from potentially feeling dumb and frustrated to feeling capable and proud of herself. I went from feeling helpless as a mom to feeling empowered too. I had found a way to support her without taking over, and honestly, I felt like a pretty great mom in that moment.
The experience made me wonder how often children mistake difficulty accessing information for an inability to learn.
There is a kind of struggle that is necessary. Learning requires us to stay with a problem, make mistakes and try again. That effort develops perseverance and confidence. There is something deeply valuable in discovering that we can do something we once couldn’t.
But I’m not sure all struggle is equally valuable.
Sometimes the struggle isn’t coming from the complexity of the idea. It comes from the way the idea is being communicated. One explanation might leave a child completely lost, while another opens everything up within minutes. This can be especially true for children with dyslexia, neurodivergent minds or learning styles that don’t always fit the way information is traditionally taught.
If we insist that they keep struggling with the same explanation, are we helping them build resilience, or are we unintentionally teaching them that they aren’t capable?
This is where I think AI could become incredibly valuable, not as something that gives children answers or does their work, but as a tool that helps parents and educators find more ways to explain, teach and connect.
It doesn’t have to replace the teacher, the parent or the effort required to learn. Maybe it can support all three.
Of course, the distinction matters. There is a difference between using AI to escape the thinking and using it to make the thinking accessible. Children still need opportunities to wrestle with ideas, tolerate frustration and trust their own minds. But perhaps they also deserve access to explanations that help them experience what it feels like to understand.
The more I think about it, the more I wonder whether this is only about children. How many adults still carry the belief that they are bad at something because of an experience they had in school? How many of us stopped trying, not because we couldn’t learn, but because no one found a way to teach us that made sense?
Maybe one of the most empowering uses of AI will be helping us revisit some of those beliefs. Not by removing every challenge, but by giving us another way into the learning.
