What my 4ft tall teacher taught me this week

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

If you’ve been with me for a while you know that my daughter is one of my biggest teachers. Aila’s always outdoors catching lizards, watching birds, playing with butterflies, and this week she found a caterpillar. She wanted to bring it into the house. I didn’t want it in the house and I didn’t want her touching it since she had a huge allergic reaction several years ago. She still remembers how she broke out in hives because of the hairs of the caterpillar last time. However, this time she was savvier and looked up online what type of caterpillar it was and let me know that this one would not give her a reaction. I trusted and let her hold it with her hands.

She made a little home with leaves and sticks in her tiny terrarium and today the caterpillar is preparing to go into its cocoon. According to Aila, this caterpillar will turn into a beautiful butterfly.

I share this story with you because it made me wonder about our own cocoons as humans. Do you allow yourself to cocoon, to take time off, or time for introspection?

If you do cocoon how does it feel?

If you don’t carve out time for cocooning why not?

Do you feel judged by others if you do make space for this?

I feel like our lives are so busy nowadays and there’s such pride and praise for business that we don’t allow space for rest and contemplation.

Right now, I'm coming out of my own cocoon which I had been in for most of the fall last year and part of this winter –about 7 months.– It wasn’t easy to allow this process, to just be, to journal, to meditate, to connect with nature, to go about my routines without answers, without knowing what would emerge. Now I can say I am surfacing strong, like a new butterfly excited to embrace the world around me.

What stage are you in your life or business? Are you in a chrysalis or a butterfly coming out?

Please share below and let me know how it feels too.

Have a fabulous day!
